Week of Wild

CAL POLY SLO WEEK 4/5/6/7

Hello all!!!! It's been weeks since I have last blogged. I know, I am very sorry because I am sure all you ever wait for is my blog posts on your Sunday nights. Well, here you are.

These past few weeks have been crazy. I had midterms and tests and homework and projects and college and wow. It all has come so fast and hard. I am surviving though!!!! I went home for the weekend to see Chad go to Homecoming and for his 16th birthday. It was really refreshing and much needed. I love my pups!!!!!! It's good to see everyone alive and well just as me. Shout out to Ann for driving mom and I late at night to SLO and for the great breakfast <3 The next weekend after that was Family Weekend. It was lovely to get to take my cute fam around my new home and show them some of the new places that I have found. We went to Avila Beach and hiked Arch Graveyard, has some beauty love with mom and got our toes done. Overall, it was better to see their happy faces again, TWO WEEKS IN A ROW!

Now, some SLO updates and me. Ella and I are great just the same. It's so wonderful to have a wonderful person to have this experience with and be comfortable with. We have made really good friends with our floormate, Christina. I love her and her beautiful spirit. I have an internship with the Equipment Manager for the football team!!!! It's SO INSANE. I cannot believe that I am already learning and doing things that I never thought would be possible in my FIRST quarter of college. I go to football practice two times a week at 6AM (it's a 30 min walk from my dorm to the field lol) and sometimes office work when I have some time. My boss, Rich, is a crazily cool person. He graduated from San Diego State and started his career there and then worked at San Jose State. This is his first year at Cal Poly and I feel so blessed to be under his wing. I get a lot of experience and get to have a personal relationship with football players. I am so happy. Today, I got to hang out with my RA, Maddie, and she's a really cool person as well, so it was nice to be in her company. Community Council is going well too! We had a pumpkin carving event with our hall that was really successful. Halloween weekend was also a good time. Ella and I had matching costumes all weekend, we looked cute. I'll include pics. Also, it's nice to have a BFF, shoutout Bobke. I found a friend to watch Broncos' games with. Michael and Ella and I got a campsite for Yosemite in April!!!! I'M SO EXCITED BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO HAVE SO MUCH FUN AND I MIGHT GO TO SEATTLE FOR SPRING BREAK AND AHHHH!!!!!

Honestly, not many complaints over here. I miss my dog. Homework is pretty crappy. I wish mom could do my laundry. But it's COLLEGE!!!! I'm thankful for all the texts and love I get from everyone on a weekly basis. Hope all is swell. Two weeks and I'll be home for Thanksgiving Break, mom's bday, and a RECTUM GANG REUNION.

Much love,
Ari

My cute friends from home. We went to the LA Haunted Hayride.

Week of Waffles

CAL POLY SLO WEEK 3

Many of you might be asking "how does this title of this week make literally any sense?" Let me tell you, it actually doesn't at all, but that should be expected from me. I'm calling this week the Week of Waffles, because even though I didn't have the chance to eat a waffle this week, I really like waffles, and I really liked this week.

First of all, I officially made Community Council for my housing community. I am the Vice President of Administration, which is basically a combination of Secretarial and Treasure duties that would be in a normal student council position. It's not really like any other student government position I have ever held so I'm pretty excited. I met the other three members of our Community Council Monday night; their names are Ryan, Lia (Lol yes mom you are still apart of my SLO life) and Mickey (also funny). I haven't had a chance to talk to them that much, but overall I think we are going to be a fantastic team and have a wonderful time planning events and addressing the needs of our hall. Friday night I got to meet the entire VPA group for all the communities and it turns out I'm the SINGLE VPA who is a female. I thought that was pretty funny. I also went to a leadership conference yesterday morning until around 1pm with the rest of my council. We learned the ins and outs of Community Council and how to run a meeting. It just feels great to feel like I am finding my place here at Cal Poly. To be honest, I have been out of touch and feeling a little like I don't deserve to be here. but being in a classroom filled with kids who love leadership and choose to be in a room for 5 hours on a Saturday to better serve the school made me feel amazing. I know why I am here. We already have one scheduled event and I am so excited!!!!! Like LITERALLY!!!!!!!!!!! It's called Rave-lationships and it's a rave based stop light party. We are getting a DJ and you dress according to your relationship status. So green is single, yellow is complicated, and red is taken. It's going to be extremely fun.

I also am really in love with RPTA (Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration for those of you who don't know, that's my major). My program is filled with people who love people. I always feel excited to go to my two RPTA classes. I can sit and talk with people who genuinely care what you are about, what you like, and what you value. Everyone wants to be there. We are going on a field trip this week to the Embassy Suites and we have to wear business casual clothes (which I have never worn or even owned before) so I went shopping yesterday afternoon with girls from my floor (also something I really enjoyed about this week). It was great.

Because of RPTA, I have an extremely different experience at Cal Poly than say, an engineering major or math major. Cal Poly is also a different place than a normal school with the motto, "Learn by Doing." I got to meet with the CP Athletic Director this week and he was interested in my goals and career aspirations. We are currently in the process of getting me more involved with the athletic department. Words can't express how proud and happy I am to be placed in such a beautiful place, learning and experiencing things like this. It's insane. My professors have a lot of experience and are open to sharing the life they have lived. My RPTA 101 professor was in a documentary last year about extreme sports, like how cool is that!

I didn't fulfill my food goal of trying every place on campus, but the journey never stops. I tried four new places this week. Metro Station is pretty lit. I had some cereal at an all you can eat cereal bar and some mini corn dogs. Woohoo. I may or may not have been unable to achieve this goal because I went off campus a lot this week. (WOOHOO) On Tuesday, Ella and I went downtown for lunch and studying. You can see my amazingly presented Pineapple fried rice below. On Thursday, we went to the farmer's market and ate at the same Thai food place we ate at on Tuesday. Today, we went to Avila beach and got the BEST acai bowl I have ever had in my life, EVER. It was a beautiful day to go to the beach and catch up on some homework. I wish I could share the incredible views of San Luis Obispo with all my favorite people. It's a place much worthwhile to take time to visit. I promise.

Here's a few things I have realized after being here for three weeks:

  • My favorite thing about constantly being around new people is learning about new artists. Music is insanely diverse and I can't wait to get exposed to more music.
  • I have underappreciated the water pressure at home all my life. Miss it.
  • I miss my dogs every night.
  • *PSA: I need more fun socks.
  • People have super weird habits, like it's not pretty when you wash your dishes in the bathroom sink. AHEM.
  • Walking everyone makes you tired, but my calves look good.
  • Makeup seriously needs to not be taken as seriously. How am I expected to have a full face of makeup everyday by 8am.
  • I miss my wifi at home.
  • Life is weird without parents.

Well that's really my week in a small nutshell. I really liked this week. No complaints. I'm going home this weekend for homecoming and Chad's 16th birthday (WHAT THE HECK!?!??!?!) So catch me in G-town if ya want!!!!! MUCH LOVE.

Ps. Ya'll still slacking on the packages. Not you though, mom. That package was LIT.

A few of the rectum gang together for an Oovoo date. Miss you all so much.

My new fave place to chill.

Just another pretty view on my walk back to my room.

FIRST OFFICIAL ROOMIE PIC. I LOVE THIS GIRL AND I AM SO GRATEFUL TO HAVE FOUND HER. SHE IS SO SWEET AND DID MY DISHES FOR ME THIS WEEK WHEN I WAS SAD AND HAVING A BAD DAY. WORDS LITERALLY CAN'T EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE OF HAVING HER IN MY LIFE. I REALIZED THIS WEEK THAT SOME DAY WILL BE MY LAST DAY TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS OF OUR ROOM AND I GOT SAD. LOVES LOVES LOVES.

Week of What's

CAL POLY SLO WEEK 2

Ok!!! I survived my first week of college (kind of) and also finally decided my blog theme. If you haven't noticed by the title, each week is going to be labeled depending on one word that I think fits the theme of the week..... clearly this week is "what." Because a lot of curious things happened this week, but also some things that are SO great compared to my first week that it's just like "WHAT?!?!??!??!?!?!??"

Let's start this week at the most appropriate place possible, Sunday about 6 hours after I posted my first blog. I was sitting down to lay in my bed and forgot I am at college where your bed is the size of kid's canoe and slammed my head backwards into the concrete wall of my bed. Which immediately turned into me getting a concussion. I don't know why I thought that since I posted my blog that Week of Whammys would be over because it was still Sunday, the week hadn't finished yet. So yup. That's the official end of Week of Whammys. And the start of week of WHATS. Like how does that happen? Only to me, I swear. I self-medicated by eating Cal Poly made ice cream and a few giggles.

My first real day of college was intense. Four classes and 8 hours of classes was a bit much, but I got through it. But not without dropping a class and adding a new one first. Lol what? Yeah, I couldn't take Intro to Women's and Gender Studies because it was a 6-8pm class after a super long day and the teacher made it terrible. So now I am in RTPA 110, a class that's orientation based for my major and I start that tomorrow at 12! College is crazy.... they did not prepare me for the quarter system. But I like the fast pace and the amount of material I learn in a week. I already had four quizzes last week (what?). Wednesday's classes were a lot better because I was only in class until 6pm. I was able to go to dinner with Michael and I made it my new mission to try every food place on campus before next Thursday. I only have 6 more places to go (what?). I found a few new study places I really enjoy and have made better, closer friendships this week with a few people. Ella and I have of course hit it off..... lol what? Roommates who actually get along.

Thursday I went to downtown for the first time since I have been at school and my first time to the Farmer's Market!!! It was beautiful. We got peaches, apples, avocados, hummus, and nectarines. I loveddddd it. We walked there and it was really nice. I went to the school gym for the first time this week and the machines are exceptional. I was doing abs in the private studio when about 12 frat guys came in and it's just like what???? I had to stop immediately. I got locked out of my room Thursday night at about 3am. In a sleepwalking daze, I walked the opposite way of my room down the hall to left, instead of the right. So I was outside for about 10 minutes, until Ella heard me knocking, woke up, and opened the hallway door. THAT'S ALSO WHAT. I witnessed a lot of people do some pretty weird stuff and I got to have dinner with Ann and Robert on Friday. WHAT!!! I love visitors. I made a tunnel out of nightstands and climbed through it. WHAT. This week me and Ella also discovered that any type of food or the student center is .5 miles away so every time we walk there and back, we are walking a mile. WHAT!?!??!?! I guess they don't call it Calf Poly for no reason.

In my major (Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration), I have to have 1000 hours of volunteer service to graduate. In my Intro to RPTA class, we have to have 10 hours for the quarter and it has to be through pre-approved partners. We met two partners this week, SLO Blues Baseball (a collegiate summer baseball program) and the Cal Poly Athletic Director. Let's just say I now have some really awesome and exciting opportunities coming away so WHAT!!!!!!!!! I did homework all day and that's why this is so late so I am sorry for my terrible timing, it just adds to my Week of Whats. I know I didn't post pictures of my room, therefore I incorporated some pictures today. My picture game is also pretty weak, I'm sorry Mom & Dad. I am off to bed and Netflix..... I'll see you later, peeps. Miss you all bunches.
xoxo, Ari

PS. NO ONE SENT ME MAIL!!!!!! I'll just assume it's because you didn't see (or read to the bottom of my last blog) so I will include my address again here. Thanks ;)

Week of Whammys

CAL POLY SLO WEEK 1

Let me get started by saying that this is not by any means going to be formal, but I am going to try to post once a week (Sundays) just to give an update on my life as much as I can for all of those lovely people out there who love to keep tabs on me..... ok maybe just for mom and dad. It's already been ONE WEEK at school!!!! It honestly has felt like maybe a decade or two because I am just so utterly exhausted, but it's also been pretty positive. We technically started classes on Thursday of this week, but I only had one class. Tomorrow is my first real day of college.

Now would be a good time to explain the title of this blog.... The first week of Cal Poly features little to no classes and a lot of fun/exploring for incoming freshmen or WOWIES to get to know the area and make new friends. The week is called WOW (Week of Welcome) However, I endured a lot of mishaps, some bigger than others, making this officially my new title of WOW (Week of Whammys). Here is a brief list of all things that happened to me or my new friends at school

  1. Butt rash ( AT MY FIRST DAY AT CAL POLY )
  2. Allergy attack (Ft. runny nose & watering eyes)
  3. Heat stroke (Threw up three times)
  4. Alex's hair got violently stuck in her hair
  5. Multiple people have been taken away in ambulances
  6. My friend from my WOW group had his roommate leave for the quarter because he was kayaking with his WOW group and dove into the shallow end.....and cracked his spine
  7. Somehow every time I want to brush my teeth the bathroom is being cleaned
  8. My hair tie broke at Morro Bay in the wind
  9. Internet is terrible (making friend skype dates pretty interesting)
  10. Ella got sand kicked in her pizza
  11. Sprayed face wash in my hair
  12. BLISTERS EVERYWHERE
  13. Somehow Ella and I's periods are already in sync
  14. Hit my head on the dryer while doing laundry
  15. Chad/Mom got me a cinnamon roll from Morro Bay (Never gave it to me & Chad took it to school for lunch)
  16. Shin splint (JUST ONE SHIN)
  17. Fell (almost doing the splits) on the Architecture graveyard hike
  18. Split Soda all over Michael's apartment
  19. Also a glow stick broke all over his floor
  20. Massive sun burn from working the game yesterday
Now I know this sounds like I am having a terrible time at school, but it's quite the opposite. I found this entire list entirely funny and well, just my luck. I hope you can laugh at my misfortune as much as I have. In all seriousness, I am really happy. My first immediate realization is I am in the best place I could have ever asked for. Everyone is so nice and kind and considerate. People (so far) respect my opinions regardless if theirs differ. My room is cozy and my roommate (Ella) rocks! My RA is a beautiful person who I have gotten the chance to talk to several times and I cannot wait to increase that relationship. I have made new friends. I could go on and on about my WOW group adventures. We went to Morro Bay, Montana De Oro, hikes, and many enlightening presentations here on campus. Yesterday was the second football game I have worked and we beat #6 Montana 42-41. It was INSANE. We went to WOWARAMA which is liking basically speed dating almost every member of your class in one night, CRAZINESS. We went to Big Fall Welcome and a bonfire at Grover Beach. I also got like five new Nike pieces of clothing and I just feel blessed. Friday night, I went to a Silent Disco with my friends, Michael and Haley. I have never had that much fun before. The concept is that everyone checks out a pair of headphones and there are two channels you can connect to playing two separate sets. Therefore, everyone is listening to the channel they want through headphones and dancing and being happy... just making complete fools out of yourselves and not even caring!!! I got to see Cal Poly men's soccer beat UCLA 1-0. I met incredibly passionate, adorable people in my major and college. I feel like all the possibilities are just endless and exciting.

My favorite adventure I got to experience this week was hiking architecture graveyard. It is in Poly Canyon and architecture majors used to complete their senior projects up there. There are just super cool structures all over the place that you can explore and wonder how people created these incredible pieces. It reminds me a lot of HGTV episodes and "You Live in What?" It's very intriguing. I felt peaceful... it's actually really indescribable. I cannot wait to do that hike when the hills are rolling green.

I'm also planning to run for Interhousing Community council, which is kind of like ASB for our housing community. They plan events, socials, and keep the community happy. The elections are this week and I am not even nervous..... don't ask me why. I think I'm just excited for this journey here to start! I'm ready to find myself and my niche.  Anyways, that's just a blur of this first week here at Cal Poly SLO!! I am open to facetime calls whenever anyone wants.... just let me know! I want to hear how everyone else is too. Also....if you really love me, send me mail or packages or yourselves. Anything works.
